From the research and book, Gut and Psychology Syndrome  By Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, MMED(Neurology), MMEDSci(Nutrition)

Gut and Psychology SyndromeGut and Psychology Syndrome (GAP Syndrome or GAPS) is a condition, which establishes a connection between the functions of the digestive system and the brain. This term was created by Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, MMedSci (neurology), MMedSci (human nutrition) in 2004 after working with hundreds of children and adults with neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as autistic spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD), schizophrenia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression, obsessive –compulsive disorder, bi-polar disorder and other neuron-psychological and psychiatric problems.  Physical conditions which are healed with the GAPS diet include: crohns, colitis, colic, cystitis, allergies, acne, diabetes type I, multiple sclerosis, any autoimmune condition, stomach aches, any digestive disorders, failure to thrive, migraines, pms, and many more.

The GAPS Protocol is a 3 step healing protocol that uses a specific carbohydrate diet(SCD), the replenishment of gut flora through fermented foods and supplemental probiotics, and lifestyle modifications to reduce the toxic load on to allow the body to heal. The diet allows the gut to “Heal and Seal” to bring about both physical and psychological health.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet(SCD)is not a new protocol but has been researched and implemented since the 1920‘s by Dr Sydney Haas. The specific carbohydrate diet is a strict starch free, lactose-free and sucrose-free diet that was designed for people with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Dr. Haas' theory was that carbohydrates, being forms of sugar, could promote and fuel the growth of bacteria and yeast in the intestines, causing an imbalance and eventual overgrowth of bacteria and yeast. He believed bacterial overgrowth could impair enzymes on the intestinal cell surface from functioning and prevent the proper digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. This would cause the carbohydrates to remain undigested in the intestines and provide even more fuel for bacteria and yeast.

In the 1950‘s a mother, Elaine Gottschall used the diet to heal her daughter from Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis.  She wrote about it in the book called,Breaking the Vicious Cycle. Intestinal Health Through Diet.

The GAPS Protocol is effective in all digestive disorders, autoimmunity disease processes(lupus, diabetes typeI, MS, etc), arthritis of any kind, Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, allergies, asthma, hay fever, endocrine disorders(thyroid, adrenal, PMS, etc), Migraines, neuropathy, other neurological conditions, chronic cystitis, food intolerances, FPIES(food protein intolerance enterocolitis syndrome), autism, dyspraxia, dyslexia, anxiety, depression, etc.  Most people have many of these symptoms both physical and psychological.
